About the Race
Organised by the Island Sailing Club, the Round the Island Race regularly attracts over 1,600 yachts and 16,000 sailors for a one-day yacht race which covers 50 nautical miles anticlockwise around the Island. The race is the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK.
Open to all, professional sailing teams and crews compete with family and first time racers. Our sister company Solent Events organises yachts that take part in the race, please follow this link. The 2017 Race will take place on Saturday 1st July 2017. Contact us for options to spectate on the water.
The first Round the Island Race took place in 1931 with 25 entries. The prize trophy then, as now, was the Gold Roman Bowl. Numbers of entries steadily increased, reaching peaks of 1,813 in 1989 and 1,875 in 2008 with notable names taking part including former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, Sir Ben Ainslie and Dame Ellen MacArthur.
Simply a spectacle not to miss, images of the event in past years speak for themselves! Chartering a Rib will get you up close to the racing action allowing you to track the competitors on the course.
The race is started by class so the bigger, faster boats are the first to cross the line. Standing off the start line and then following these boats up the Solent by Rib is an epic experience. The Rib then doubles back for the general starts and we usually follow the main fleet to the Needles for the iconic rounding with spinnakers flying.
We rarely follow the fleet all the way around the Island by Rib; most guests prefer going ashore in Yarmouth or Cowes for lunch and then joining the Rib again to be at the finish line watching the fastest yachts return and take line honours.
