Discover Yarmouth

Our Favourite Port

Yarmouth is our favourite port on the Isle of Wight and many would say one of the most beautiful ports in the country. The moment you step off the boat you are in an unspoilt and picturesque harbour dominated by Georgian architecture. The town is small and thus perfect to explore on foot and is an ideal Rib charter destination.

Yarmouth has all the key ingredients; the country’s longest wooden pier, a 16th century castle guarding the entrance and the smart George Hotel with a spectacular restaurant garden on the beach front next to the castle.

Yarmouth has a number of excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants with a trade built around the flourishing harbour, popular for generations amongst yachties.  Yarmouth is where we go for our own pleasure – please feel free to tap into our local knowledge – we have sampled them all!

We like to take guests for a cruise through the harbour then under the swing bridge into the upper reaches. This area is beautiful with stone boathouses, a watermill and views up to Tennyson Down.

On foot you can explore the Yar using the riverbank walk as it winds inland through reed beds and meadows all the way to the Red Lion at Freshwater.

Yarmouth harbour is busy throughout the season. The harbour has an ever changing cohort of visiting yachts and power boats.

There always seems to be something going on but highlights include the bi-annual ‘Old Gaffers Festival’ celebrating old gaff rigged wooden sailing vessels and the annual Taittinger sailing regatta.  See Event Calendar for more details.

Our tablet based discovery tour around Yarmouth is full of interesting local information and encourages you to reach areas you may not find or notice on a general stroll around the town. The tour is ‘hotspot’ based, meaning you have to reach a location to answer the questions.  Great fun!
