Cowes and the Medina River
Cowes is the centre of sailing in the UK and the location of the famous annual Cowes Week regatta. See our Cowes Week page for more information about Rib charter services for the regatta itself.
Cowes is built around the entrance to the river Medina and it is the most northerly point on the Isle of Wight. The river Medina flows into Newport, the epicentre of the Island as well as its capital. Cowes is a fantastic place to explore by Rib, made all the more interesting by a flourishing boat building industry.
Cowes is split by the Medina to form East Cowes and West Cowes (linked by chain ferry), although ‘’Cowes’’ invariably refers to West Cowes where the yacht clubs, principal marinas and high street are located.
The high street runs parallel to the River and is thus immediately accessible as you step ashore. Cowes is small enough to explore by foot but big enough to represent a proper outing with a great deal to see and enjoy.
We stay abreast of the various café, pubs and restaurants so please do not hesitate to contact us for information on the best places to eat.
Cowes is home to several Yacht Clubs which we are able to book for larger groups. The Island Sailing Club who host the Round the Island Race, and Royal Ocean Racing Club are favourites with great indoor spaces and balconies with wonderful waterside views.
We also often recommend the Folly Inn not least because it has a private pier and is thus great fun to arrive at by Rib.
Our tablet based discovery tour around Cowes is full of interesting local information and encourages you to reach areas you may not otherwise find. There are a range of questions and challenges that are timed as well as photo challenges – all great fun.
